Outbreak: Anatomy of a Plague

Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Jefferson Lewis and produced in partnership with the NFB, Discovery Canada and Radio-Canada, feature-length documentary Outbreak: Anatomy of a Plague is inspired by Michael Bliss’ national bestseller Plague: How Smallpox Devastated Montreal.  The film blends together historical and contemporary strands to present the gripping and tragic story of Montreal’s 1885 smallpox epidemic, the last urban outbreak in the modern world, set against a  contemporary city setting as it asks the question: how would Montreal react today if faced with an epidemic outbreak of smallpox or some other killer disease? An insightful and surprising look at the history of the outbreak and the likelihood – and effects – of a future pandemic.
